Machu Picchu

The ruins of Machu Picchu, rediscovered in 1911 by Yale archaeologist Hiram Bingham, are one of the most beautiful and enigmatic ancient sites in the world. While the Inca people certainly used the Andean mountain top (9060 feet elevation), erecting many hundreds of stone structures from the early 1400's, legends and myths indicate that Machu Picchu (meaning 'Old Peak' in the Quechua language) was revered as a sacred place from a far earlier time.

Whatever its origins, the Inca turned the site into a small (5 square miles) but extraordinary city. Invisible from below and completely self-contained, surrounded by agricultural terraces sufficient to feed the population, and watered by natural springs, Machu Picchu seems to have been utilized by the Inca as a secret ceremonial city. Two thousand feet above the rumbling Urubamba river, the cloud shrouded ruins have palaces, baths, temples, storage rooms and some 150 houses, all in a remarkable state of preservation. These structures, carved from the gray granite of the mountain top are wonders of both architectural and aesthetic genius. Many of the building blocks weigh 50 tons or more yet are so precisely sculpted and fitted together with such exactitude that the mortarless joints will not permit the insertion of even a thin knife blade. Little is known of the social or religious use of the site during Inca times.

The skeletal remains of ten females to one male had led to the casual assumption that the site may have been a sanctuary for the training of priestesses and /or brides for the Inca nobility. However, subsequent osteological examination of the bones revealed an equal number of male bones, thereby indicating that Machu Picchu was not exclusively a temple or dwelling place of women.

Crystal Skulls

Skulls are humanity's foremost symbol of death, and a powerful icon in the visual vocabularies of cultures all over the globe. Thirteen crystal skulls of apparently ancient origin have been found in parts of Mexico, Central America and South America, comprising one of the most fascinating subjects of 20th Century archaeology.

These skulls, found near the ancient ruins of Mayan and Aztec civilizations (with some evidence linking the skulls with past civilization in Peru) are a mystery as profound as the Pyramids of Egypt, the Nazca Lines of Peru, or Stonehenge. Some of the skulls are believed to be between 5,000 and 36,000 years old.

Many indigenous people speak of their remarkable magical and healing properties, but nobody really knows where they came from or what they were used for.
Were they left behind after the destruction of a previous world, such as Atlantis? Are they simply ingenious modern fakes or can they really enable us to see deeply into the past and predict the future?

Much research is currently being done on the skulls. However, their origin is still a baffling mystery. They seem to defy logic. Everything that is known about lapidary work indicates that the skulls should have been shattered fractured, or fallen apart when carved.

Tony, Emmy and Oscar winner Anne Bancroft is best known for her portrayal of Mrs. Robinson, the older woman who seduces young Benjamin (Dustin Hoffman) in the film The Graduate

(1967). A performer from an early age, she studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Actors Studio in New York and landed her first professional gig on television in 1950. In 1952 she headed to Hollywood as a contract player, but returned to New York after a disappointing string of roles in low-budget movies.
In 1958 she played opposite Henry Fonda in Two for the Seesaw and won her first Tony Award. The next year she won another Tony for her portrayal of Helen Keller's teacher, Annie Sullivan, in the play The Miracle Worker. She returned to Hollywood for the film version of the play (1962) and won an Oscar for Best Actress. After that Bancroft was nominated for an Oscar four more times, for The Pumpkin Eater (1965), The Graduate , The Turning Point (1977, with Shirley MacLaine) and Agnes of God (1985, with Jane Fonda). She is also a multiple Emmy nominee, winning the award in 1970 (Annie, the Women in the Life of a Man) and again in 1999 (Deep in My Heart).

Elegant and intelligent, Bancroft was frequently cast in roles requiring gravitas and sophistication, including David Lynch's The Elephant Man (1980, with Anthony Hopkins), 84 Charing Cross Road (1987, also with Hopkins) and G.I. Jane (1997, with Demi Moore).

In 1978 she was nominated for a Tony Award for her portrayal of Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir... Bancroft was married to comedian and filmmaker Mel Brooks from 1964 until her death.

The Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle (sometimes also referred to as the Devil's Triangle) is a strange and mysterious place in the southern Atlantic Ocean. It is roughly the shape of a triangle and it is said to have sucked planes and boats into its dark and murky waters. No one knows what happened to the planes and boats. When some enter the waters of the triangle they disappear forever.

Why do ships and planes seem to go missing in the region? Some authors suggested it may be due to a strange magnetic anomaly that affects compass readings (in fact they claim Columbus noted this when he sailed through the area in 1492). Others theorize that methane eruptions from the ocean floor may suddenly be turning the sea into a froth that can't support a ship's weight so it sinks (though there is no evidence of this type of thing happening in the Triangle for the past 15,000 years). Rita Hayworth was born as Margarita Carmen Cansino in New York on October 17, 1918 into a family of dancers. Her father, Eduardo was a dancer as was his father before him. He immigrated from Spain in 1913. Rita's mother met Eduardo in 1916 and were married the following year. Rita, herself, was trained as a dancer in order to follow in her family's footsteps. She joined her family on stage when she was 8 when her family was filmed in a movie called La fiesta (1926) (aka La Fiesta). It was her first film appearance, albeit uncredited, but by no means was it to be her last.

Rita was seen dancing by a 20th Century Fox executive and was impressed enough to offer her a contract. Rita's "second" debut was in the film Cruz Diablo (1934) at the age of 16. She continued to play small bit parts in several films under the name of "Rita Cansino" until she played the second female lead in Only Angels Have Wings (1939) when she played "Judy McPherson".

By this time, she was at Columbia Pictures where she was getting top billing but it was the Warner Brothers film The The Strawberry Blonde (1941) that seemed to set her apart from the rest of what she had previously done. This was the film that exuded the warmth and seductive vitality that was to make her famous. Her natural, raw beauty was showcased later that year in Blood and Sand (1941) filmed in Technicolor.
She was probably the second most popular actress after Betty Grable. In You'll Never Get Rich (1941) with Fred Astaire, was probably the film that moviegoers felt close to Rita. Her dancing, for which she had trained all her life, was astounding. After the hit Gilda (1946), her career was on the skids.

Although she was still making movies, they never approached her earlier work. The drought began between The Lady from Shanghai Salome (1953), she was not seen again until Pal Joey (1957). Part of the reasons for the downward spiral was television, but also Rita had been replaced by the new star at Columbia, Kim Novak. After a few, rather forgettable films in the 1960s, her career was essentially over. Her final film was The Wrath of God (1972). Her career was really never the same after Gilda.

Her dancing had made the film and had made her. Perhaps Gene Ringgold said it best when he remarked, "Rita Hayworth is not an actress of great depth. She was a dancer, a glamorous personality and a sex symbol. These qualities are such that they can carry her no further professionally". Perhaps he was right but Hayworth fans would vehemently disagree with him.

Rita, herself, said, "Every man I have known has fallen in love with Gilda and wakened with me".

By 1980, Rita was wracked with Alzheimer's Disease. It ravaged her so, that she finally died on May 14, 1987 in New York City. She was 68. News of her illness and death brought an international awareness of the disease that resulted in a massive increase of funds for care and research.

Jack The Ripper

The identity of the killer of five women in the East End of London in 1888 has remained a mystery, but the case has continued to horrify and fascinate. Between August and November 1888 the Whitechapel area of London was the scene of five brutal murders. The killer was dubbed "Jack The Ripper". All the women murdered were prostitutes, and all except for one - Elizabeth Stride - were horribly mutilated.

The first murder, of Mary Ann Nicholls, took place on 31 August.
Annie Chapman was killed on 8 September.
Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddoweson were murdered 30 September
and Mary Jane Kelly on 9 November.

There has been much speculation as to the identity of the killer. It has been suggested that he or she was a doctor or butcher, based on the evidence of weapons and the mutilations that occurred, which showed a knowledge of human anatomy. Many theories have been put forward suggesting individuals who might be responsible. One theory links the murders with Queen Victoria's grandson, Prince Albert Victor, also known as the Duke of Clarence, although the evidence for this is insubstantial.

Violence to prostitutes was not uncommon and there were many instances of women being brutalised but the nature of these murders does seem to suggest a link between the perpetrators.

A quarter of a mile from the scene of Catherine Eddowes' murder, the words "The Juwes are not the men to be blamed for nothing" were found scrawled on a wall in chalk, and it was suggested this was written by the killer. A police officer ordered the words to be removed, fearing an anti-Semitic backlash in an area with a large Jewish population.

The murderer is also sometimes thought to have made contact by letter with several public figures: these letters, however, like the chalk message, have never been proved to be authentic, and may have been hoaxes. Jack the Ripper was never caught and he is not thought to have killed again after November 1888.

Because the killer's identity has never been confirmed, the legends surrounding the murders have become a combination of genuine historical research, folklore, and pseudohistory. Many authors, historians, and amateur detectives have proposed theories about the identity of the killer and his victims.

Katharine Hepburn was born in Hartford, Connecticut.

She won four Academy Awards in an acting career which lasted more than 60 years. She began making movies in the 1930s and succeeded almost immediately, winning her first Oscar for Morning Glory in 1933.

Hepburn's characters were often brash, chilly or even haughty on the outside, yet emotionally fragile at their core; her quick wit, intelligence and high-class bearing served her especially well in comedies, notably with co-stars Cary Grant and Spencer Tracy.

She is perhaps best known for her role as a prim missionary opposite Humphrey Bogart The African Queen. She won two more Oscars for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967, with Tracy and Sidney Poitier) and The Lion in Winter (1968), and toward the end of her career the nostalgic On Golden Pond (1981, with Henry Fonda) got her a 12th nomination and a fourth Oscar. In 1996 she retired to Connecticut and lived there quietly until her death.

After a short marriage, Hepburn divorced in 1934 and remained single; she had a long love affair with Spencer Tracy... Hepburn's last feature film was Love Affair (1994, with Warren Beatty)

She died in her home, surrounded by loved ones, on June 29, 2003, at the age of 96.

Late on the night of 19th September, 1961, 41 year old child welfare worker Betty Hill and her 39 year old husband Barney were travelling home after a pleasant vacation in Southern Canada. They were travelling along Interstate Route 3, which cuts through the White Mountain of New Hampshire on the long journey home to New England. For quite a while the Hills had been puzzled by the 'white star' that had seemed to be tailing them. Barney, being sceptical by nature, thought it may be a plane heading towards Montreal. Traffic was very scare on the highway, and the couple decided to stop to allow their dog, Delsey, to have some exercise. It was now close to midnight and , as Betty walked the dog off the side of the road, Barney used binoculars to study the strange light more carefully. After a few minutes further into their journey, Barney felt the sudden urge to stop and leave the car.

They were near an isolated spot called Indian Head, and ignoring Betty's cries to return to the car, Barney walked deeper into the roadside tree cover, staring ahead at the white light in the sky. It became apparent to Barney that the strange light was a UFO. It had a shape described by both witnesses as like a pancake or a banana, and Barney was sure he could see figures standing against a large picture window in front of the spacecraft. Barney lowered the binoculars from his eyes and shouted 'I don't believe this!', then muttered something about a military helicopter playing tricks on them, then screamed out loud 'They're going to capture us!' with that, he fled back to the car. The couple then sped off southwards to begin the drive down from the mountains. Further down the road, the Hills heard a strange 'beeping', a sound which, years later the Hills would describe as similar to a microwave oven. A second 'beeping' noise followed by a bump, and then everything returned back to normal.

The morning after they arrived home, the Hills noticed some problems with their car. The vehicle had strange blotches where the paint had been removed, revealing bare metal. Betty's sister suggested that they should see if the spots were magnetized. She asked this because she also had experienced a UFO before, and had read that UFOs could stall car engines. Using a hand-held compass, they discovered that the compass needle swung wildly over the blotched areas of the car, suggesting that these spots, were indeed magnetized. Distressed, the couple decided to ring the nearby Pease Air Force Base to report their experience with the UFO. They were told nothing at the time, but documents researched 20 years later report of a similar UFO being reported at the base on September 20th at 2.15 a.m. in the morning.

The Hills also decided to report their encounter to a national UFO group. UFOlogist and astronomer Walter Webb visited the Hills on 21st of October, and set in motion what was to become one of the most remarkable investigations in UFO history. Barney was worried, because he could not explain the scuff marks on his shoes, as if he had been dragged roughly along the ground, and he was also suffering from an extremely painful back. On 30th September, Betty began to have a series of recurring nightmares that lasted for several nights. In them she would see horrible faces with cat-like eyes that belonged to creatures intent on kidnapping her and her husband. One fact that emerged during Walter Webbs investigation was that, during the Hills journey, they could not account for two hours of time, or 55km of their route. By Spring 1962, the Hills problems were still evident and they were regularly seeking medical advice to relieve them of their mental torment. Finally they were referred to psychiatrist Dr. Benjamin Simon in Boston. He recommended them to undergo regression as a way to free their subconscious minds of whatever was causing the problems.

From the start, the emotional impact of that September night was obvious. Although both Betty and Barney were regressed separately, a number of images surfaced from their subconscious minds that were remarkably similar. The Hills' response under hypnosis undoubtedly shook Dr Simon. On several occasions staff had to help him restrain Barney while he relived the events of that night and fought to escape the aliens that he visualised. According to the evidence retrieved through these sessions, the UFO had landed beside the road, and rendered the Hills' semi-conscious. The couple were then taken against their will aboard the craft by small beings with whitish skin and large cat-like eyes (similar to greys). Once on board, the couple were separated and both given medical examinations. Barney had semen extracted by a suction device, while Betty had to endure a large needle being stuck into her abdomen. Other samples such as nail and hair clippings were also taken. The aliens also appeared fascinated by the differences between the couple. Barney, who was Ethiopian by birth, had dark skin. After the tests, Betty was shown around the UFO where she attempted to persuade what seemed to be the group's leader to allow her to take away a book as proof of their adventure, but this was denied. One thing that sceptics cannot explain is, Betty could draw a detailed sketch of the star system Zeta Reticuli which is in the Reticulum constellation, 6 years before astronomers even discovered it? This case has become a landmark case in UFO folklore. The importance of the Hills' abduction experience cannot be overemphasized. It changed the world of UFOlogy forever.

Born on a tobacco farm (December 24, 1922) where she got her lifelong love of earthy language and going barefoot, Ava Gardner grew up in the rural South. At age 18, her picture in the window of her brother-in- law's New York photo studio brought her to the attention of MGM, leading quickly to Hollywood and a film contract based strictly on her beauty. With zero acting experience, her first 17 film roles, 1942-5, were one-line bits or little better. After her first starring role in B-grade Whistle Stop (1946), MGM loaned her to Universal for her first outstanding film, The Killers (1946). Few of her best films were made at MGM which, keeping her under contract for 17 years, used her popularity to sell many mediocre films.

Perhaps as a result, she never believed in her own acting ability, but her latent talent shone brightly when brought out by a superior director, as with John Ford in Mogambo (1953) (nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress) and George Cukor in Bhowani Junction (1956).

After 3 failed marriages - Mickey Rooney (1942–1943), Artie Shaw (1945–1946) and Frank Sinatra (1951–1957) dissatisfaction with Hollywood life prompted Ava to move to Spain in 1955; most of her subsequent films were made abroad. By this time, stardom had made the country girl a cosmopolitan, but she never overcame a deep insecurity about acting and life in the spotlight. Her last quality starring film role was in The Night of the Iguana (1964), her later work being (as she said) strictly "for the loot".

In 1968, tax trouble in Spain prompted a move to London, where she spent her last 22 years in reasonable comfort.
She died January 25, 1990 at age of 67. Her film career did not bring her great fulfillment, but her looks may have made it inevitable; many fans still consider her the most beautiful actress in Hollywood history.

The riddle of Atlantis is among the greatest of the world's unsolved mysteries. Where, for a start, was the exact site of this huge island civilization? did it really, as early historians reported, vanish from the earth in a day and a night? Small wonder that since the earliest times scholars, archaeologists, historians, and occultists have kept up an almost ceaseless search for its precise whereabouts. Beginning with the Greek philosopher Plato's first description of the lost land that was apparently "the nearest thing to paradise on Earth," this chapter examines in detail the basic evidence for the existence and cataclysmic destruction of Atlantis. (Note: Plato was not the first one to know about Atlantis. He was the first to describe it in detail. Pythagoras taught Plato what he knew) Of all the world's unsolved mysteries, Atlantis is probably the biggest. All kinds of tame and wild animals roamed its meadows and magnificent forests, and drank from its rivers and lakes. Underground streams of wonderfully sweet water were used to irrigate the soil, to provide hot and cold fountains and baths for all the inhabitants. - There were even baths for the horses. The earth was rich in precious metals, and the Atlanteans were wealthier than any people before or after with gold, silver, brass, tin, and ivory, and their principal royal palace was a marvel of size and beauty. Besides being skilled metallurgists, the Atlanteans were accomplished engineers. A huge and complex system of canals and bridges linked their capital city with the sea and the surrounding countryside, and there were magnificent docks and harbors for the fleets of vessels that carried on a flourishing trade with overseas countries. Whether they lived in the city or the country, the people of Atlantis had everything they could possibly want for their comfort and happiness. They were a gentle, wise, and loving people, unaffected by their great wealth and prizing virtue above all things. In time, however, their noble nature became debased. No longer satisfied with ruling their own great land of plenty, they set about waging war on others. Their vast armies swept through the Strait of Gibraltar into the Mediterranean region, conquering large areas of North Africa and Europe. The Atlanteans were poised to strike against Athens and Egypt when the Athenian army rose up, drove them back to Gibraltar, and defeated them. Hardly had the Athenians tasted victory when a terrible cataclysm wiped out their entire army in a single day and night, and caused Atlantis to sink forever beneath the waves. Perhaps a few survivors were left to tell what happened. At all events, the story is said to have been passed down through many generations until, more than 9200 years later, it was made known to the world for the first time.

The man who first committed the legend to paper was the Greek philosopher Plato, who in about 355 B.C. wrote about Atlantis in two of his famous dialogues, the Timaeus and the Critias. Although Plato claimed that the story of the lost continent was derived from ancient Egyptian records, no such records have ever come to light, nor has any direct mention of Atlantis been found in any surviving records made before Plato's time. Every book and article on Atlantis that has ever been published has been based on Plato's account; subsequent authors have merely interpreted or added to it. Plato was a master storyteller who put his philosophical ideas across in the form of apparently real-life events with well-known characters, and his Atlantis story might well have been firmly relegated to the realms of fiction. The very fact that it is still widely relegated as a factual account 2300 years after he wrote it shows the extraordinary power of Plato's story. It has inspired scholars to stake their reputation on the former existence of the lost continent, and explorers to go in search of its remains. Their actions were prompted not by the Greek story alone, bit also by their own discoveries, which seemed to indicate that there must once have been a great landmass that acted as a bridge between our existing continents. read more...
